Ellis and Beyond
I am working on the genealogy of Ruth Nevitt, first wife of James Ellis (1746-1809), whose tombstone was shown in my previous post. There is plenty of information, but it is taking time to put it all together.
Meanwhile, I am looking at Ellis and related surnames in some of the county histories.
When using Family Search sources, it is best to sign in first—before attempting to follow any of the links given here.
In Oren Morton’s A History of Monroe County, West Virginia, at FamilySearch.org, the following Ellis-surnamed individuals are named as Confederate soldiers: Alexander, Allen, E. L., Henry, Newton, S. J., W. B., and W. P.
Ellises mentioned in land conveyances (beginning on page 89 of Morton’s history) were Owen Ellis, page 91, and Jacob Ellis, page 93.
On page 403, Joshua Ellis is erroneously listed as marrying Sarah Skaggs. In reality, Joshua married Sarah’s sister, Susan Skaggs, whereas Sarah married Joshua’s FATHER, James E. Ellis (son of James Ellis 1746-1809).
On page 289, Ellis is mentioned as being an English surname.
On page 482, Jacob and Owen are listed as Monroe County residents in 1799.
On page 341, the genealogical and biographical Ellis information is as follows:
I am having trouble with my internet at the moment, but there is more about the Ellises in Morton’s book. It should be easy for you to do a search to find the rest of it.
In Greenbrier County Court Orders at FamilySearch.org, there are many Ellises listed in the Index.
History of Fayette County, West Virginia, by Peters and Carden, at FamilySearch.org has many pages listing the Ellis surname. You’ll have to do a search for “Ellis” because there is no index.
I will continue looking for sources and write more as soon as possible. I have not been feeling well the last few days, but I am beginning to feel better now.
