Craig Hinkle, descendant, writes: My family name patriarch - fifth great grandfather - Phillip Hinckel (now Hinkle) and his older brother were ordered/sold by the prince of their region of Germany (Hessen-Hanau) to fight for the British against the colonists - He was one of 30,000 German citizens sent/paid (25 cents/day) by the British crown – They arrived in 1776 in Canada and fought under Gen. Burgoyne’s command – He became a prisoner of war after the British surrender at the Battle of Saratoga in October 1777 – The Hessians were treated well and marched to Camp Winter Hill outside Boston where they remained for two years – Eventually they were forced on a 70 day/700 mile march to outside Charlottesville, Va – Phillip didn’t last long at the new camp and escaped in June 1780 – He settled among German families in the upper Shenandoah Valley and fought with the locals against the British – Phillip married in 1782 and eventually moved to Unus in Greenbrier County raising eight children. He became a successful businessman operating the local general store and owned more than 600 acres at the time of his death in 1835. Phillip and his wife Barbara (1837 death) are buried in the “McClintic Family Cemetery” situated near Unus – The location could have been a part of the family property but I’ve been unable to confirm that theory - At least one son (Jacob) and one granddaughter are also buried there and other stones exist but are unreadable - To call this location a cemetery is unique in that there are cluster of grave stones/markers on the knoll of a small, heavily wooded hill off a tiny backroad in rural Greenbrier County – We (my cousins and my Dad) went on an adventure to find the location a couple of years ago and were successful – I tried to add the GPS location to Find-A-Grave but it proved more difficult than I anticipated – It was a rare experience staring at the grave of the individual that brought my family name to America so very long ago.
