The map that follows shows the districts of Clay, Nicholas, Webster, and Fayette Counties after they were formed. During the last few years of Bailey Wood’s life, he was living in Nicholas County, which at that time, included much of Fayette County. Bailey and Nancy Wood most likely lived in what is now the Mountain Cove district of Fayette County since that is where their church was.
Bailey and Nancy Wood had previously lived in the Wolf Creek district of Monroe County near the Greenbrier River and the Summers County boundary. The Skaggs families of Thomas, John, and Richard also lived in Wolf Creek District, as did the Aldersons. The town of Alderson can be seen at the northernmost point of Monroe County on the Greenbrier County border.
The documents that follow concern the sale of land to John Alderson of Monroe County. Bailey Wood, Sr., deceased, and Nancy Wood, his widow, had been owners of this land. The document was signed by their seven children and their spouses, and by the widow, Nancy.
They were: Susannah (Wood) Skaggs and husband Richard Skaggs, William Wood and wife Mary (McGraw) Wood, Nancy (Wood) McGraw and husband Martin McGraw (Jr.), Elizabeth (Wood) McGraw and husband Samuel McGraw, James Wood and wife Mary “Polly” (Halstead) Wood, Bailey Wood (Jr.) and Lucretia (Skaggs) Wood, Katherine Wood (single), and Nancy Wood (widow of Bailey Wood).
What do we know from these documents? We can confirm from these documents the names of the seven children of Bailey and Nancy Wood and of their children’s spouses at the time of signing. We know that Bailey and Nancy Wood were living in Nicholas County, but they had owned land in Monroe County. We know that Nancy Wood was still living on September 21, 1826, but Bailey Wood had already died.
This transcription was done by someone else. The source named is Vernon Fox, Nicholas County, (West) Virginia Land Deed. Heirs of Bailey Wood to John Alderson. 21 September 1826.
I (KBarrera) have made a few minor spelling and punctuation corrections that do not change the meaning of the text.
