This is somewhat new to me. Not every county website is the same, so don’t assume something will or will not be accessible. I have not been to the Greenbrier County Courthouse or the Monroe County Courthouse in person, so I am trying to get familiar with their sites. I don’t relish the thought of sitting there in person for hours wondering what I should look for and where to find it. Their sites and policies are quite different, but I found both sites clear and easy to understand. Always a plus.
Looking at the Greenbrier County Clerk’s Office, I see a link called “Online Deed Inquiry”. I looked up a few names, and it appears that these records include land and death records from pretty far back, though the date may not be evident at first. Some images are available online and some are not. You’ll have to go there, I assume.
Here are a few pages. Looks like you will have to type in the last name each time you click one of my links. Be sure and arrange things by date to make it easier to find things pertinent to your research. Most of the records were stamped “Stolen Document”. I have not figured out the reason for that. Maybe you know. I’m assuming it means they no longer have the original.
Boon: Some dates in 1899
Boone: 20th century dates and later
Burdett: Some as early as 1885
Callison: Some as early as 1870s, a lot about Isaac and Elisha
Ellis: Some before 1900
Johnson: Some before 1900
Johnston: Some before 1900
McVay: Some dates before 1860
McVey: Many dates before 1900
Shumate: A few before 1900
Skaggs: Many documents before 1899
Tackett: One record for Nimrod Tackett 1899; others are much later
Young: Dates after 1950, I think.
And so forth——
The page for the Monroe County Clerk’s Office, IMO, does a very good job of explaining what they do. It does not appear to me that they have early documents available for viewing online. You have to go there in person. I will provide a screenshot of what it says, but I’m sure you’ll understand things better if you go directly to the Monroe County Clerk’s Office link. I found the section about probate very informative.
For Vital Records, you have to actually go there. I think a lot of these records are probably already online at the WV Vital Records site.
For genealogical birth, marriage, and death documents, it looks like you will have to fill out an application, send money, and wait awhile for them to find what you need.
Is this helpful at all, or am I telling you what you already know? It doesn’t take much to annoy me when it comes to searching for information online. I think I will look at the other county courthouse records in the coming days, so you will know what to expect.
I haven't looked at county court office websites in ages, as often in the past there was nothing there to see. Nice to have a current overview.
Thank you
